Donald J. “Jay” Lecher is an associate in the firm and a registered U.S. patent attorney. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from GMI Engineering & Management Institute, in 1992. After graduating from Regent University School of Law with a Juris Doctor in 1995, he was a Patent Examiner in the Mechanical Arts at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office from 1995 to 1997 and examined applications of complex mechanical and electro-mechanical inventions. Mr. Lecher was employed by General Motors division of AC Rochester in Flint, Michigan. His design experience includes alternative/methanol fuel sensors, thermal injection molding systems, ceramic monolithic catalytic converters, throttle-body intake manifolds, automatic turning machine robotic system, a patented hybrid spark plug system and post-catalytic converter hydrocarbon sensors. His computer hardware and software experience includes CAD/CAM, finite element analysis, engine management software development, and broadband data acquisition and telemetry. Mr. Lecher also has management and manufacturing experience in consolidated the Division’s patent practice with Rochester Products Division, supervising over 150 UAW employees for large scale assembly line production, and implementing material handling systems for high-speed manufacturing. Prior to joining the firm, Mr. Lecher was an associate at a mid-sized Vienna, Virginia patent firm where he was involved with the drafting and prosecution of domestic and international patents and trademarks. He also developed a solo intellectual property law practice that specialized in managing large patent application portfolios for clients and large law firms in complex mechanical, electromechanical and electronic systems, semiconductor technology, medical devices, aerospace systems, software, data processing/business practice systems, manufacturing technologies, and telecommunication systems with digital interactive cable and satellite television. Mr. Lecher also worked as an intellectual property attorney for a large Washington, DC general practice firm specializing in interactive telecommunication systems.
